KDD、International Journal of Geographical Information Science、Annals of the American Association of Geographers、Cities等期刊和会议。

Prof. Yao Yao Named to the Career-Long List of the World's Top 2% Scientists for the First Time, and to the Single-Year List for the Fifth Consecutive Year
On October 7, the team of Prof. John P. A. Ioannidis at Stanford University released the 2026 edition (Version 9) of the World's Top 2% Scientists list on the Elsevier Data Repository. Prof. Yao Yao, head of UrbanComp Lab at the School of Geography and Information Engineering, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), is included in the career-long citation impact list for the first time. He also appears in the single-year citation impact list for the fifth year in a row.

About the List
The list is built from Scopus data and ranks researchers by a composite citation indicator, the c-score. The c-score combines total citations, the h-index, the co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, and citations to papers as single, first and last author. Researchers are classified into fields and subfields. A researcher is included if the c-score ranks in the top 100,000 across all fields, or in the top 2% of the researcher's subfield.
The list has two parts. The career-long list measures cumulative citation impact over a whole career. The single-year list counts only citations received in one calendar year, which is 2025 for this edition. This year, 243,949 researchers worldwide were included in the career-long list and 249,310 in the single-year list. In Geological & Geomatics Engineering, the subfield that covers remote sensing and geographic information science, 1,724 and 1,733 researchers were included in the two lists respectively.
Rankings
In the career-long list, Prof. Yao ranks 289,911th worldwide and 1,576th in Geological & Geomatics Engineering, with Urban & Regional Planning as his second subfield. This is his first appearance on the career-long list.
In the single-year list, he ranks 27,633rd worldwide and 309th among 82,760 researchers in his subfield, about the top 0.4%. He has been included every year since 2022. Over these five editions, his global rank rose from 135,747th to 27,633rd, and his subfield rank from 1,112th to 309th. His self-citation rate fell from about 19% to 5.5% over the same period, so most citations now come from outside the group.
Research
Prof. Yao works on geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) and urban computing. His research covers human mobility modeling, intelligent land use identification, geographic representation learning, large-scale perception of rural environments, and spatiotemporal foundation models. Recent work from the group has appeared in KDD, the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, and Cities.
Prof. Yao also used to be a Specially Appointed Professor at the Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), and collaborates with the Center for Spatial Information Science (CSIS) at the University of Tokyo and LocationMind Inc. He was named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and serves on the editorial board of Computers, Environment and Urban Systems.
Prof. Yao credited the result to the sustained work of his students and collaborators. He noted that citation metrics are one reference point for research impact, and that the group will continue its work on urban and rural human mobility and geographic intelligence.
